On the Outside Looking In

Well, according to tweeted reports from the fortunate, there are now some 10,000 betas now registered INSIDE Hogwarts. I am not one of them, nor are most of the 350 beta-waiters that have befriended me in the twittersphere.

Of course, at the moment, Pottermore is “down for maintenance,” to the chagrin of those that received their welcome emails today. That has to be beyond frustrating, but at least they know when it is up, they are in.

Although I understand the need to stagger entry, waiting comes at a cost. For some members of the Pottermore community now firmly established on Twitter–there is frustration, despondency, and a drop in productivity and interest in real life pursuits. Some people are staying up way too late in hopes that email will hit their inbox. Some are staying tethered to their computers throughout the day, or rushing home from work or school to see if there is any new news.

Even Harry did not get to proceed immediately to Hogwarts upon reading his letter–but he was given a date for the beginning of his term. It would be nice if each of us could be assigned a date so that we would know when we can gain entrance. The “Pottermore Insider” newsletter defined a 6 week spread – Mid-August through the end of September. That’s a pretty long wait for anybody.

I am hoping it’s like when you have to wait for a table at a restaurant and the host gives you an 90 minute wait-time, and then you are pleasantly surprised when your name is called fifteen minutes later. If we have to wait until end of September there are going to be some seriously disheartened people out there.

In the meantime, I guess misery loves company.

Wishing you, dear reader, speedy delivery of your owl.

  1. You’re absolutely right the waiting was hard. And I spent way too much time in front of the computer. But, then, I was working there as well.

Mine came last night. I hope your e-owl will come soon!
